Twelve stages, and the twelfth returns to the first. A count closes one turn of the warehouse and sets the plan for the next, which is why this is drawn as a loop rather than a line.

A location is not a label on a shelf. It is a company, holding a warehouse, holding a zone, holding an aisle, holding a shelf, holding a bin, and every movement names the level it happened at.

The record

Every movement keeps the document behind it

Inventory

Received, put away, picked, dispatched, returned, adjusted — each one a line saying what moved, from where to where, how many and on whose instruction. It is the report that answers where the stock went, months after it went.

Four picking methods

Picking methods, their operating model and when each is used.
Method Operating model Best used when
Piece picking Complete one order or transfer at a time. Volume is moderate, orders are large or exceptions are frequent.
Batch picking One picker collects items for several orders, then sorts them at an output area. Many orders contain a small set of frequently ordered products.
Wave picking Split and group work by product, category, schedule, route or other operational criteria. High-volume operations need planned release windows and team allocation.
Cluster picking Pick multiple orders while sorting directly into designated bins or reusable packages. Speed and immediate order separation are more important than later consolidation.

Split one delivery across several packages without creating separate customer orders.

Use a dedicated validation step when the operation separates picking from packing.

Backorders

Ship available items and keep the balance open for later fulfillment.

Dispatch control
